A Gestational Diabetes Diagnosis | A Mums Story

Not so long ago I wrote a post about Gestational Diabetes. I wrote this post because at 28 weeks into my second pregnancy I had my Gestational Diabetes diagnosis. I was probably the healthiest I had been in a long time apart from some stress, I had a healthy BMI, my diet was good, I took regular light exercise. A Gestational Diabetes diagnosis was the last thing I was expecting.

Gestational Diabetes Diagnosis

I was registered for the GTT at my booking in appointment. Only because there was Type 2 diabetes on my mothers side. Although my mother doesn’t actually have diabetes, she is borderline Pre-diabetic. My midwife was originally reluctant to book it in.  Usually you are only referred if you have a direct relative with diabetes or other risk factors. This was my only risk factor. In the end, she decided it was safer to do so and booked me in for 28 weeks.… Read More

11 ALDI Baby Product swaps every mum needs to know!

2019 update regarding my ALDI baby product swaps post: I have had to revise this post to no longer include Aldi’s Mamia First Milk, as it could be seen as a breach of the WHO code. There are a lot of questions arising over the cheaper Milk brands but First step Nutrition state in their Cost of Infant Formulas Marketed in the UK, that ‘As all first infant milks must meet current EU regulations for infant formula composition, there is no need for families to buy more expensive formula’. The reason some brands are priced lower is due to the brands not making claims through marketing and advertising and this saving is passed onto the consumer. While I am not promoting the use of formula over breastmilk, I understand the right that every parent has the right to choose how to feed their baby and some parents can not breastfeed.… Read More

Today I am….5 Months Old

baby development milestones 5 months 20 weeks

Yay, I am only a few days late with Emmie’s 5 month update! Turn on that broken record, but man, these past 4 weeks have literally disappeared before my eyes! Maybe it’s because my last update was two weeks late, I don’t know. It just seems time is going a lot faster this time round. I swear she will be toddling in a few months. I can’t believe I am writing this, here is Emmie’s 5 Month update:

5 Months

Weight: 13lbs 4oz

I have literally just come back from the clinic after getting Emmie weighed. I was so surprised to find out she had dropped a number of percentiles. She has started looking so porky?!? Ordinarily, I don’t think I would worry too much. Emmie was always on the wee side but happily followed her 25 centile line. Now though she has dropped to maybe the 13th centile or there about’s.… Read More

Teething: Is Baltic Amber the Answer?

Baltic Amber strung into jewellery has been long been hailed by many mums as a way to soothe babies through teething. Those who use Amber beads, swear by them, but there are also many that are sceptical of the healing properties they are supposed to possess. Then, there are also the safety concerns of babies wearing jewellery.

As Emmie is showing more and more signs of teething, I have begun once again to think how I can help soothe her sore gums. Teething gels are having little effect and although she doesn’t seem too bad with her symptoms, her drooling and mouth full of fist tell me she is feeling it! Finlay was never too bad with his teething and we sporadically used Amber beads, but I wanted to dig deeper to see if it could be the answer for Emmie.

So what’s the story behind Baltic Amber?

Amber has been used for centuries and was once thought to hold magical powers protecting the wearer from evil spirits and diseases.… Read More

Good Reads, Week 33, 2017: Books for Babes!

Good Reads: Children's books week 33/17

When I first published my ‘Good Reads‘ post way back in October last year, I had all good intentions of sharing different children’s books every week. To perhaps introduce you to books, you may not have discovered otherwise.  As I said before, life got in the way, My cat got poorly (then he died), I was stressed at work and I was pregnant and then got diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes. My blog took a back seat while I got back on track. Thankfully, I have found my blogging mojo. I have a nice little routine and my blogging is going from strength to strength.

So Good Reads is back! I’m not sure it will be weekly, but I think Bi monthly will be a good start. As we know books are important for children’s development. I don’t religiously read to my children. Some weeks it may be every day, some weeks perhaps once but generally it’s about every other day.… Read More

Bringing your Fairy Garden to Life!

10 Top Tips for an Interactive Fairy Garden!

So you have your fairy garden, what next? Since our fairy garden arrived I have been working really hard to keep the magic alive with Fin. Our is not just for show. We have real, live fairies living in our garden. They come out to play, they party and they are mischievous! Here are my top 10 tips for creating a magical, interactive fairy garden which will stimulate your child’s imagination!

Fairy Garden at night

1 Create an ambience – you will need a speaker like the Panasonic Waterproof Bluetooth speaker. Hide the speaker as best you can near your fairy garden. A speaker like this would be perfect. It’s small, compact, with great sound quality. It is also fully waterproof. so it’s protected if accidentally splashed, especially when it comes to watering your garden with your little one. I would suggest the best track for your fairy garden ambience has to be ‘Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy‘ by Tchaikovsky.… Read More

Breastfeeding Boobie Beads | Stylish and Practical!

Breastfeeding, something I wasn’t able to do with Finlay, but desperate to do with Emmie. I never quite believed it would happen. Almost 5 Months later, I am still exclusively breastfeeding!! I won’t lie, it hasn’t been easy. There were times I thought I couldn’t do it, but I persevered to a point where I was happy and confident in feeding my baby. Then Emmie began to grow and move, ECK!! I needed some Breastfeeding Boobie Beads!

As if my pleas for help were heard, I was offered the chance to review some Boobie Beads (fantastic feeding and teething jewellery). Created by a mum for mums, Breastfeeding Boobie Beads provide a welcome distraction for babies whilst feeding and double up as a teether. Made from soft silicone, BPA and toxin free, they make the perfect choice for little ones to play and chew on. I was sent a gorgeous orange and pink necklace to try out.… Read More

Today I am….. 4 Months Old

baby milestones development 4 months old 16 weeks

I’m running a few weeks late with this update. My excuses reasons are: Allergic reaction to conjunctivitis (me), Sickness bug (Emmie and Fin), Head Injury (Fin), Birth of new Cousin (Aunty) and a week off together (the four of us)! However, on 06th July Emmie turned 4 months! I feel like a broken record but really, has a month passed since Emmie’s 3 month update? Time continues to fly by incredibly fast and Emmie is growing bigger by the day, the past month has been incredible and we have hit some exciting milestones before they were even expected!

4 Months

Weight: 12lbs 6oz

So this past month, Emmie went bald!!! Not completely, she had a fine covering, but considering she was born with lots of dark hair, she has turned into a little egg head. I expect it will grow back like Fin’s as they seem to be quite similar in colouring, time will tell.… Read More
